Masonic Year

Pedro W. Guerzon, the 68th Grand Master, was a dedicated Mason for more than 30 years. His active involvement started when he was raised as a Master Mason on December 10, 1962, in Davao Lodge No. 149 in Davao City and continued unabated until his death in 1993. Born in Intramuros, Manila on August 3, 1927, Guerzon finished his BSC degree at the Far Eastern University. He thereafter settled in Davao City. In 1963, however, he transferred to Cagayan de Oro City to assume the distributorship of Getty Oil (Philippines) for Misamis Oriental, Iligan and Bukidnon. From there he branched out and became the President of Three “G” Distributors and the operator of the Licuan Basic Service Station in Cagayan de Oro City. In Cagayan de Oro City, Guerzon continued his active involvement in the Craft. In 1965, he became the charter Junior Warden of Macajalar Lodge No. 184 serving in this position until 1967. From 1968 to 1970, he was Senior Warden and in 1971 the Master of the Lodge. Guerzon was Grand Lodge Inspector of Apo Kahoy Lodge No. 166 of Gingoog City in 1974 and 1975. He was also a charter member of the Advisory Council of the Wadih Saab Chapter, International Order of DeMolay, when it was organized on June 21, 1975. In 1976, Guerzon was elected Worthy Patron of Cadena de Amor Chapter No. 16, Order of the Eastern Star and served as such until 1980, aside from being District Deputy Grand Master from 1977 to 1979. In 1980, he was appointed Grand Marshal. This year also saw the birth of Anthurium Assembly No. 5, International Order of the Rainbow for Girls in Cagayan de Oro City. Guerzon was chosen as the Assembly’s “Rainbow Dad” Then in May of the same year he was also appointed Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of Scotland. Guerzon was likewise active in the Scottish Rite. He received the 32° (Master of the Royal Secret) on September 18, 1965. He was elected Junior Warden of Mindanao Lodge of Perfection in 1971, Senior Warden of Rafael Palma Chapter of Rose Croix in 1971, Preceptor of Jose Abad Santos Consistory in 1973-1974, and First Lieutenant Commander of Leonard Wood Council of Kadosh in 1974-1975. On February 15,1975, he was invested with the rank and decoration of Knight Commander of the Court of Honor (KCCH), was elected Venerable Master of Mindanao Bodies Lodge of Perfection in 1977-1978; coronated with the 33° (Inspector General Honorary) on February 9, 1979; appointed Supervisor of Mindanao Bodies, Cagayan de Oro City, Valley of Northeastern Mindanao and concurrent Supervisor of Bukidnon Bodies in April 1980; appointed Deputy of Mindanao Bodies, Orient of Northeastern Mindanao in May, 1982 and crowned Sovereign Grand Inspector General and Active Member of the Supreme Council of the Philippines, A & A S R, on March 12, 1987. An awardee of the Grand Cross of Color of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, Guerzon was elected Junior Grand Warden of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the Philippines in April 1982; Senior Grand Warden in 1983; Deputy Grand Master in 1984; and finally, Grand Master in 1985. Aside from his Masonic activities, Guerzon was also busy with civic projects, having been President of the Cagayan de Oro (Host) Lions Club and a District Governor of Lions District 301-F of Lions International. He was, likewise, a life member of the YMCA and a member of the Provincial Medicare Commission of Misamis Oriental. Guerzon was married to the former Charo Diño Viray, a CPA, who is an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was elected Worthy Matron when Cadena de Amor Chapter No. 16, OES, was started in 1976. She was also the Deputy to the Most Worthy Grand Matron, General Grand Chapter, OES for Visayas and Mindanao starting in 1983 when she was appointed by Carol C. Strizer. Charo is also an awardee of the Grand Cross of Color of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls, and belongs to a family of Masons. An uncle, the late Angel Saqueton of Kawit, Cavite, was instrumental in the membership of her two brothers, Domingo and Edgardo, with Emilio Aguinaldo Memorial Lodge No. 31 of Kawit, Cavite. An older sister, Violeta, married Mario G. Vicente of St. John Corregidor Lodge No. 3, and another sister, Erlinda, a Mason’s widow, joined Cadena de Amor Chapter No. 16, OES, together with brother Edgardo and his wife, Carmen. Guerzon’s daughter, Mary Grace (Kelly) Guerzon, joined the Anthurium Assembly No. 5, IORG, Cagayan de Oro City, right after her 12th birthday. She holds the distinction of receiving a merit badge at her first meeting with the Assembly. During his lifetime Guerzon shared one thing in common with wife, Charo, and daughter Kelly: total commitment to Masonry for the rest of their lives. On March 20,1993 Guerzon suffered a fatal heart attack. He was 66 years old.
